Scorers: Morsia (p), Udida
Having been knocked off the top of the league last week after six months uninterrupted (28th Oct- 28th Apr), the Old Boys knew they had to win the last game of the season to keep alive a very slim hope of winning the league. The maths were that Old Boys winning combined with Tooting Bec losing to both of the bottom two over the bank holiday weekend would mean Old Boys were champions – a West Brom sized task!
The Old Boys set about their last league game at Laleham well and created the better opportunities without creating a real chance to test the keeper, although Curt headed against the post from a corner. Laleham grew into the game and finished the first half well without testing Thomas Dolfi in the visitors goal.
The second half was twenty minutes old when Elliott Morsia was fouled in the box and after a long delay for treatment to a defender, the Old Boys striker stepped up to score the penalty.
Both teams had chances with Dolfi making a couple of good saves, Rob was nutmegged numerous times, and the Old Boys had enough chances to put the game out of reach.
With less than a minute of normal time to play as Laleham pushed for an equaliser Chris O’Reilly won the ball, it fell to Peter Udida on the half way line, he nutmegged one defender on the half way line, drove into the box twisting this way and that, sat the defender down and then hit a rising shot into the net!
2-0 the final score but no fairytale ending to the season. The Old Boys finish as runners up to Tooting Bec with 57 points from 26 games. A great first season at step 7. We look forward to attempting to go one better next season.
For now the focus is on next Saturday – League Cup Final 3pm @Abbey Rangers FC versus Chessington KC.
